It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Andy Kaufman, on May 16th, 1984, at the age of 35. Andy was born on January 17th, 1949 in New York City. He was a stand-up comedian, actor, and performance artist. He earned fame as a character actor on the television show Taxi (1978-1983) as well as his numerous appearances on Saturday Night Live, Late Night with David Letterman, and other TV shows and films. Andy's unique comic style – incorporating absurd and unpredictable moments – kept audiences laughing and kept his career at the forefront of entertainment. His offbeat acting style was highly influential and helped to define a new era of comedy. He was perhaps best known for his character Latka Gravas on Taxi, and for his creation of the intergender wrestler Tony Clifton. Andy was also a strong advocate for animal rights, actively supporting multiple organizations. He is survived by his father Stanley and brother Michael. We will remember Andy for his unwavering dedication to his craft, his ability to make us laugh, and his passion for making a difference. We are deeply saddened by his loss and extend our condolences to those affected.
