On January 12, 2005, Amrish Puri passed away at the age of 72. A renowned Indian theatre and film actor, he was best known for his portrayal of iconic villainous roles. During his fifty year career, Puri acted in more than 400 movie and television shows. His breakout role was Mola Ram in the 1984 Indiana Jones film, The Temple of Doom. He is remembered for his larger-than-life portrayal of film villains, such as Mogambo in the 1987 hit, Mr. India, and Viru Sahastrabuddhe (Virus) in the 1995 movie, Dangerous. Many other roles showcased Amrish Puri’s inimitable talent and style. Puri won numerous awards and honors for his work, including the prestigious Padma Shri in 1999 from the Indian government. He also won multiple Filmfare Awards for Best Villain and Best Supporting Actor. Amrish Puri is survived by his three sons, one daughter, and several grandchildren. He will be remembered fondly by fans around the world as an enduring presence of Indian cinema.
