On September 2, 1964, Alvin Cullum York passed away at the age of 76. York was born December 13, 1987, in Pall Mall, Tennessee, to a sharecropping family. He dropped out of school in the 5th grade to help support his family. York served in the United States Army during WWI and gained fame for his extraordinary bravery in battle. During the Battle of Argonne on October 8, 1918, he single-handedly defeated a group of German soldiers and is said to have taken 132 prisoners alone. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic actions. After WWI, York returned to his hometown in Tennessee and became active in community service. He promoted education, built a school and allocation for a teacher, created the Knowledge Club that encouraged young people to get an education, and drafted a law to make moonshining illegal. York has left a profound legacy and will be dearly missed.
