The world-renowned artist Alphonse Mucha passed away on July 14th, 1939 in Prague at the age of 78. Mucha was born in Ivančice, Czech Republic on July 24th, 1860. He is remembered for his distinct art nouveau style. Mucha showed a keen interest in art from a young age and attended the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, and the Académie Julian in Paris before becoming a renowned artist. In a career spanning over 40 years, Mucha was most famously known for his theater posters and decorative panels. He also created advertisements, books, and portfolio designs, among other works of art. His most prominent piece of art, ‘Slav Epic’, was a cycle of 20 large paintings depicting historical events of the Slavic nations, entrusted to Mucha by then Czechoslovak mayor Tomáš Masaryk. The work was exhibited in the Chateau of Moravská Skála. Mucha’s works remain iconic across the world today, and his legacy is remembered and celebrated. He was a major contributor to the Art Nouveau movement of the 19th century. He passed away in 1939, remembered for his iconic works of art that will remain timeless for ages to come.
