Alexander Kerensky, a Russian revolutionary who served as the Prime Minister of the Russian Provisional Government, passed away on June 11, 1970, at the age of 89. Born in Simbirsk, Russia, on April 22, 1881 — what is now Ulyanovsk — Kerensky was raised in a family of renowned intellectuals and healthcare professionals. His father, Pyotr Kerensky, was the head doctor of the local government school. Kerensky studied law and political science at the University of St. Petersburg and was a founding member of the Emancipation of Labour group, a socialist organization dedicated to promoting liberty and equality in Russia. He quickly rose up the ranks of the Russian Social Democratic Labor Party, eventually becoming a member of the the Central Committee of the Petrograd Soviet and the Secretary of the Central Committee of the United Russia Party. In 1917, Kerensky was appointed Minister of Justice in the first provisional government formed after the overthrow of the Tsar and, later, the Prime Minister. His promotion of political freedoms and progressive reforms angered the Bolsheviks, who were determined to impose a Soviet-style government. After being deposed by the Bolsheviks in October 1917, Kerensky fled to France, where he lived for the remainder of his life. A renowned political figure, Alexander Kerensky will be remembered by many for his unwavering commitment to democracy and justice in Russia and his role in the country’s transition to its modern form.
