It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Alex Karras on Tuesday, October 10th 2012, at age 77. Alex Karras was born in Gary Indiana on July 15th 1935. He was an actor, professional football player, and sportscaster. Karras was an outstanding lineman for the Detroit Lions from 1958 to 1970, winning NFL Lineman of the Year honors in 1962 and 1964. In addition, he was a four-time Pro Bowl selection. Karras was heavily involved in Hollywood, appearing in numerous films and television roles. Most widely remembered as 'Mongo' from the comedy-western classic, Blazing Saddles, he was also known for his role as Alex and George Papadapolis on the television series Webster. Karras was also an excellent analyst for Monday Night Football on ABC from 1974 to 1976. Karras is survived by his daughters: Catherine, Patricia, and Elizabeth; his sons: Nicholas, George, and Jean; and his grandson, James. Alex Karras was a true icon and will be remembered lovingly by his family, friends, and legions of fans.
