Aldo Gucci, one of the best-known fashion designers of 20th century, died on January 19, 1990, at the age of 84. Gucci was born on March 26, 1905, in Florence, Italy. He appearead to be destined for the fashion world, as his father was a leather goods manufacturer. At the age of 23 Gucci began working for the family business, which he eventually took over and developed into one of the most successful luxury fashion brands in the world. Gucci established shops in Milan, Rome, and Florence, and opened the first overseas branch in New York City in 1953. By the time of his death, the brand had expanded to more than 100 stores scattered across the world, and its products had become synonymous with luxury design. Gucci often returned to Florence and drew inspiration from the city's history, earning him the title of "Florentine Gentleman" in the Italian press. Gucci is remembered for his lasting contribution to the fashion world. He also left behind his wife of 50 years, and his four children, who succeeded him as the owners of the Gucci empire.
