Alberto Fujimori, a former Peruvian president, passed away on September 11, 2024 at the age of 86. He was born on July 28, 1938 in Lima, Peru. Fujimori was a prominent figure in Peruvian politics, serving as the president of Peru from 1990 to 2000. During his presidency, Fujimori implemented several economic and social reforms that helped stabilize the country's economy and reduce poverty rates. He also played a role in the defeat of the insurgent group, Shining Path, which had been terrorizing Peru for many years. However, Fujimori's presidency was marred by controversy and allegations of human rights abuses. In 2000, he was forced to resign amidst a corruption scandal. He fled to Japan but was later arrested in Chile and extradited back to Peru to face multiple charges of corruption and human rights violations. After a lengthy trial, Fujimori was convicted and sentenced to 25 years in prison. He served 12 years before being granted a presidential pardon in 2017 due to health reasons. Fujimori's legacy remains a topic of debate in Peru. While some see him as a strong leader who brought stability to the country, others view him as a dictator who violated human rights and abused his power. He is survived by his children and grandchildren. His death marks the end of a controversial era in Peruvian politics.
