The world mourns a true icon of stage and screen, acclaimed actor Alan Bates, who passed away on 27 December 2003, aged 69. Born on 17 February 1934 in Derbyshire, England, Alan was an award-winning actor whose illustrious career spanned over half a century, with roles ranging from Shakespeare’s Romeo in ‘Romeo and Juliet’ (1955) to Count Vronsky in ‘Anna Karenina’ (1977). He earned prestigious accolades, such as an Academy Award nomination for his performance in ‘Georgy Girl’ (1966) and a Golden Globe for his role in the BBC drama ‘An Englishman Abroad’ (1983). His diverse range of roles also saw him in ‘Women in Love’ (1969), ‘Far From The Madding Crowd’ (1967) and ‘Gosford Park’ (2001). He was also a stalwart of the contemporary British stage, gracing the roles of King Lear and Macbeth. He received a Bafta Fellowship, one of the highest honors from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, in 2003. Alan is predeceased by his parents, Levi and Jessie, and leaves behind many devoted fans and admirers of his work. His legacy as a great actor and respected talent will live on. Rest in Peace.
