American actor Alan Arkin, often praised for his engaging and highly expressive performance style, passed away on June 29, 2023 at the age of 89.
Arkin's career began in the 1950s, when he got his start as a comic actor, regularly appearing on shows such as The Jack Paar Show, The Dick Van Dyke Show, and the Ed Sullivan Show. After starring in a number of iconic films alongside other Hollywood mainstays, such as The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming, Catch 22, Harold and Maude, and The In-Laws, Arkin eventually cemented his status as one of the most successful and admired character actors in the business.
Throughout his career, he was the recipient of numerous awards and honours, including an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Little Miss Sunshine in 2006. He was also nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award, winning Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries for his lead role in a TV adaptation of the novel, The Burning Bed, in 1984.
In addition to his roles in television and film, Arkin was also a talented musician and, in the 1970s, released several albums.
Arkin is survived by his children, Anthony, Adam, Matthew, and Simon.
