Aileen Carol Wuornos, age 46, of Florida, passed away on October 9, 2002. Aileen was a convicted serial killer who was responsible for six murders during a period of several months in 1989 and 1990. Her criminal history made her a prominent figure in American popular culture. She was born on February 29, 1956 in Rochester, Michigan, to parents Diane Wuornos and Leo Dale Pitkanen. Aileen had a troubled childhood, losing her father before she reached the age of two under mysterious circumstances, and growing up in a home filled with neglect and violence. She was eventually taken in by her grandparents, but at the age of 15 she was sent to a state-run juvenile facility and, later, a reform school. Despite her troubled upbringing, Aileen worked as a waitress, day care worker, and a prostitute throughout her life as she struggled to make ends meet. In 1989, her life of crime began, and she began a horrifying killing spree of seven men that spanned several months. In 1992, she was charged with six counts of murder and pleaded guilty to the charges. Ultimately, she was sentenced to death for her crimes. Aileen’s legacy will remain as one of America’s most notorious serial killers. She will be remembered and missed by her family and friends.

When we finally know we are dying, and all other sentient beings are dying with us, we start to have a burning, almost heartbreaking sense of the fragility and preciousness of each moment and each being, and from this can grow a deep, clear, limitless compassion for all beings. Sogyal Rinpoche
