Born on December 13, 1936, in Geneva, Switzerland, Aga Khan IV, also known as Prince Shah Karim Al Hussaini, was the 49th hereditary Imam (spiritual leader) of the Shia Ismaili Muslims. He was the grandson of Aga Khan III and the direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad through the lineage of Ali. Throughout his life, Aga Khan IV dedicated himself to the spiritual and socio-economic welfare of the Ismaili community. He founded the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), a network of development agencies present in over 30 countries, focused on improving the quality of life of people in the areas of health, education, architecture, culture, microfinance, and more. Aga Khan IV was also known for his passion for horse racing and was an accomplished breeder and owner of racehorses. He won numerous prestigious races, including the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in 2016. In addition to his philanthropic and business endeavors, Aga Khan IV was a global leader and advocate for peace, pluralism, and understanding among different cultures and religions. He received numerous international awards and honorary degrees for his efforts towards these causes. Aga Khan IV will be remembered for his profound impact on the Ismaili community and for his contributions to global development and interfaith harmony. He leaves behind a legacy of compassion, generosity, and service to others.
