Durkheim is heralded as one of the founding fathers of sociology and is famous for his 1895 masterpiece, “The Rules of Sociological Method”. He is credited with the establishment of the first sociology program in Europe, at the University of Bordeaux in 1895. His works focused on a variety of topics including education, religion, suicide, collective consciousness, science, and more. Durkheim’s legacy is rooted in developing sociology as a field of study rooted in real-world applications. His life’s work has had tremendous influence in shaping the way sociologists in the past and present study and interpret society. Throughout his career, Durkheim was famously modest and believed that ultimately it was society who was responsible for whatever he had achieved, not him.
